Large-leaved Wilkiea

Shrub or small tree, 1-6 m tall; bark creamy grey, smooth to finely scaly. Stems hairless, resting buds covered with small scale leaves.

Leaves simple, opposite. New growth reddish. Stipules absent. Petiole 2-10 mm long. Leaf blades oblong, narrowly to broadly elliptic or obovate, 6.5-24 cm long, 2-9 cm wide, base cuneate, obtuse to subcordate, margin entire or toothed, apex acute, shortly acuminate or obtuse with mucro. Venation of 7-11 pairs of lateral veins. Domatia absent. Surfaces hairless, oil dots fine, numerous, sometimes obscure.

Inflorescences axillary, dichasial cymes or panicles. Flowers unisexual, monoecious, actinomorphic. Male flower a globose receptacle, 2-3 mm diam., tepals 6, around ostiole or pore at apex of globose receptacle, with 4 or 8 stamens on inner surface of receptacle, filaments very short. Female flower a flattened globose receptacle, 5-7 mm diam., with a large ostiole, upper half of receptacle falling as a calyptra at maturity, tepals 12 or 14, minute; 13-20 free carpels enclosed by receptacle, ovaries superior; receptacle enlarging and becoming swollen in fruit, calyptra shed and leaving a circular scar.

Individual carpels developing into ovoid drupes, 15-20 mm long, 10-12 mm diam., glossy, purple-black to black, clustered on a shared swollen yellow, receptacle. Stone or endocarp solitary, 1-seeded, cream or pale-brown, 18-20 mm long.
