Stem

Usually flowers and fruits as a shrub about 2-3 m tall.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 12-20 x 3.5-6.5 cm, upper leaf blade surface glabrous, underside clothed in short thick hairs, petioles about 1.5-2 cm long. Lateral veins seven to nine on each side of the midrib. Margin with about 25-30 teeth on each side.

Flowers

Pedicels about 30-45 mm long. Calyx strigose on the outer surface, lobes filiform, about 5-6 mm long, tube about 4-5 mm long. Corolla tube about 20 mm long, lobes about 3-5 mm long, finely hairy. Basal part of the inner corolla tube clothed in translucent hairs. Anthers fused together in the flower bud, filaments spirally twisted after anthesis. Staminode one, about 3 mm long. Pollen white. Style about 20 mm long.

Fruit

Fruits glabrous, elongate, about 15 mm long, partly enclosed by the persistent calyx at the base, style persistent at the apex. Seeds numerous, about 0.7-0.8 mm long, testa marked by curved striations. Embryo about 0.2 mm long.

Seedlings

Cotyledons orbicular, about 1.5-2 mm diam. First pair of leaves sparsely clothed in hairs. Leaf blade margin with 1-3 teeth on each side. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade margin regularly toothed with about 20-30 teeth on each side. Upper surface of the leaf blade sparsely clothed in translucent hairs while the lower surface is densely clothed in +/- erect translucent hairs. Lateral veins depressed on the upper surface of the leaf blade. Seed germination time 44 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ. Known only from the Thornton Peak, Mt Spurgeon, Mossman, Mt Sorrow and China Camp areas. Altitudinal range from 400-1200 m. Grows as an understory plant in moist areas in upland and mountain rain forests.
