Family

Martelli, U. (1914) Webbia; raccolta di scritti botanici 4(2): 401. Type: Australia: Nord Queensland (H. Berol.). Nella mia collezione vi è un bellissimo esemplare inviatomi nel 1904 dal missionario Dempsey raccolto nei dintorni di Cook Town.

Stem

Tree to ca. 10 m tall. Prop roots are present, ca. 30 cm long, slender. Bark with dense erect aerial roots. Plants male or female.

Leaves

Leaves 1.3-1.8 m x 60-80 mm, glaucous green. Margin entire or rarely a few spines at base; midrib spineless. Leaf bases often persistent on lower portion of trunk, falling on upper portion leaving prominent leaf scars.

Flowers

A terminal spike. Male flowers: floral bracts white, flowers fragrant.

Fruit

Fruit a multiple fruit, orange or red, about 20-30 cm long x 14-25 cm diam. Segments about 6.5-8 x 5-8 cm, 4-6 angled. About 9-12 seeds per segment. Seeds about 2-2.2 cm long.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in CYP, NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 500 m. Grows in rainforest, riparian forest, vine thickets, woodland and open forest.
