Romnalda grallata R.J.F.Hend.

Perennial up to 40 cm tall. Stems mostly severed from ground and the plants grow then on stilt roots that are hard and rigid, and up to 20 cm long. Basal stem without any leaves but densely clothed in old leaf bases.

Leaves crowded. Leaf blades 12-35 x 1-1.6 cm; leaf apex with a few (3-8) teeth.

Base of inflorescence flattened. Flowers fleshy, pedicellate; sepals petaloid and fused at the very base, cream coloured with purplish margins, 3.5-4 mm long. Petals elliptic-oblong, 4-4.5 mm long. Stamens 3 fused low down and 3 fused high up on petals. Style with the upper part forming a prominent hook.

capsule ovoid, 8-10 mm long, apices of capsule valves wrinkled with thickened margins, apices very pointed and sharp, sepals persistent. Testa glossy brown to reddish brown, surface of seed with large deep pits.

Occurs in the Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas areas in NEQ. Altitudinal range from 60-1200 m. Grows in shade of rainforest and vine forest.
