Stem

Buttresses often prominent and plank like, particularly on larger trees.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 5-11 x 2-4 cm. Midrib raised on the upper surface. The main lateral veins frequently forked some distance from the margin of the blade. Teeth, if present, mainly towards the apex of the leaf blade.

Flowers

Perianth (sepals) broadly ovate, about 6-9 x 4-6 mm. Petals usually absent. Stamens about 90-100, filaments less than 0.5 mm long. Ovary about 2.5 mm long, style about 1.5 mm long.

Fruit

Fruits sparsely clothed (fruit surface easily visible between them) in persistent broad-based spines about 3-5 mm long. Fruits 2-valved, about 15 x 12 mm beneath the spines. Seeds about 12-13 x 7 mm, about 80-90% enveloped by the aril.

Seedlings

Cotyledons elliptic, about 27-30 mm long. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade +/- elliptic, apex acuminate, base attenuate but abruptly narrowed into the petiole, margin sinuate or crenate; glabrous on the upper surface; petiole hairy; stipules oblong, small and hairy. Seed germination time 13 to 26 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to Queensland, occurs in CYP, NEQ, CEQ and southwards as far as south-eastern Queensland. Altitudinal range in CYP and NEQ from 40-1200 m. Grows in well developed rain forest on a variety of sites.

Natural History & Notes

Produces a useful general purpose timber. Wood specific gravity 0.57. Cause et al. (1989).
