Woodland, shrubland, grassy areas, roadsides, disturbed sites, rocky outcrops, and swamp margins. Widespread.
Introduced annual or perennial herb, prostrate, stems to 0.5m long, usually less than 0.2 m tall. Stems 4-angled with 4 longitudinal keels, hairless. Leaves opposite each other or sometimes in whorls of 3, 0.4-2.5 cm long, 3-15 mm wide, hairless, paler and dotted with orange to blackish glands below. Flowers 5-12 mm in diameter, red to orange, pink, or blue to purple, with 5 'petals' fused together at the base. Flowers Winter to Summer.
