Common name

Pandan

Stem

Tree 10-20 m. Prop roots present from base of stem to 50 cm long. Trunk with spiny conical nodules. Trunk and upper branches may produce pups (plantlets). Plants male or female.

Leaves

Leaf to 3.5 m x 10 cm. Margin spiny from near base to apex; midrib spiny from near base to apex. Juveniles may be spineless.

Flowers

A terminal spike. Inflorescences male or female.

Fruit

Fruit a multiple fruit, orange to red, about 38-40 cm long x 22 cm diam, with about 135 segments (phalanges). Each segment about 7-9 x 3-6.5 cm. About 8-13 seeds per segment.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in NEQ in the Russell River area. Altitudinal range near sea level. Grows in rainforest and swamp forest.
