Vine with woody stems. Stem silky hairy when young, soon becoming hairless.

Leaves simple, opposite. Stipules interpetiolar, 2 (-3) on each side of petiole, leaf-like, larger stipules to 14 mm long with distinct lamina and petiole, smaller stipules strap-shaped to 4.5 mm long, both caducous and ± visible as a scar. Petiole 2-7 cm long. Leaf blades lanceolate to elliptic, cordate or ovate, sometimes suborbicular, 6-17 cm, 3.2-11.5 cm wide, base truncate to cordate or auriculate, margin entire or obscurely crenate with small marginal glands, apex acuminate or apiculate. Upper surface hairless, lower surface silky hairy when young but becoming hairless, although often hairs retained on veins, hairs medifixed. Venation 4-7 pairs of lateral veins, palmately veined at base. Two glands usually visible, one on each side of the petiole, just before its junction with the leaf blade.

Inflorescence axillary, compound, with flowers arranged in condensed racemes of 10-30 flowers, racemes arranged in a dichasial pattern (a central axis with two lateral axes). Floral bracts up to 7 mm long, each with a large green gland on each side of the midrib. Peduncles 4-6.5 mm long; pedicels 3-7 (-12) mm long. Flowers bisexual and male, on separate plants, actinomorphic, 5-merous, c. 2 cm diam., yellow. Sepals connate only at base, elliptical to ovate, 2-3.3 mm long, green. Petals clawed, with narrowly constricted base and orbicular to broadly obovate limb, 6-10 mm long overall, yellow. Male flowers with usually 10 (-12) stamens and a rudimentary ovary; styles absent. Bisexual flowers with 10-12 stamens and a superior ovary of usually 3 united carpels, densely hairy; styles 3, free, 3.5-3.6 mm long; stigmas peltate.

Fruit consists of a group of winged samaras joined at their bases. Individual samaras conspicuously winged with a prominent dorsal wing and often with smaller wings either side, dorsal wing 2.5-3.3 cm long, nut 7-9.5 mm long, green turning brown. Seeds about 5-7 mm long enclosed in a tough leathery endocarp.
